Shattuck Hall, built in 1915 as an elementary school, now houses Portland State University’s newly accredited Department of Architecture program. This project, originally a deferred maintenance project to replace the building’s aged mechanical and electrical systems and improve seismic performance, evolved into an expanded building program meeting the goal of LEED Silver while adhering to the original $13 million maintenance budget. Currently tracking LEED Gold, the newly renovated, 66,000 square foot Shattuck Hall showcases a theme of “systems on display” to serve as visible teaching tools for the future architects it houses. Building upgrades leave new and original assemblies and systems intentionally exposed, evidenced by the existing reinforced concrete structure, the original 1915 ductwork, and the largest installation on the West Coast of new radiant heating and cooling ceiling panels. The project restores daylighting and ventilation to previously concealed parts of the building, and creates disabled access to the roof terrace and studio spaces. Additional features include new waterless urinals and low flow fixtures, new occupancy-sensor lighting, time clock shut-offs, daylight sensors, new ceiling fans, and a new telecom distribution network. Future project goals will look to the adjacent landscape for stormwater treatment, the roof surfaces for green roofs, and rooftop photovoltaics. Allowing students the opportunity to monitor building performance and display results, Shattuck Hall is a compelling teaching tool at every turn. Learn more about the challenges and innovations behind this project in an intriguing on-site tour and discussion led by three SRG architects instrumental to its success.

This session involves an interactive on-site presentation, a discussion of lessons learned, and an informative tour of the innovative sustainable design concepts implemented into the newly renovated Shattuck Hall.
